Shana Tovah!
Today marks the happy new year to all Jewish students and faculty at Syracuse University and around the world. Though most students are upset about having classes on Rosh Hashanah, the staff and faculty seem to understand the university's reasoning for making such a decision. They say classes are canceled for next Friday, which is Yom Kippur, the most religious day of the Jewish calendar. It's more sensible to cancel classes next week than today because Yom Kippur is holier than Rosh Hashanah, and S.U. needs to pick and choose which holidays are important enough to cancel classes. Father John Ruffo from the Alibrandi Catholic Center on campus says he thinks the university does a good job at devoting attention to all religions and faiths on campus. He says if you go to the Hendrick's Chapel website, there are loads of information about all the religious groups on campus and when services and celebrations are held for each. He also says if a new faith wanted to hold some kind of service or celebration on campus, Hendrick's Chapel is really flexible and would "bend over backwards" to accommodate the group.
