Pots and pans are flying around the kitchen at Joey's Restaurant in Dewitt as they finish up preparations for the start of the tenth annual Festa Italiana in downtown Syracuse.
The festival is a three day event that will showcase sixteen local restaurants and bakeries. This family fun event celebrates Italian heritage with food, live music, Italian bingo, bocce tournaments, children's activities, and more.
Vendors are expecting anywhere between 45,000 and 65,000 attendees. With such large crowds, planning for the event is crucial to how the weekend will go.
Dennis Hayes, the Director of Operations for Joey's Restaurant says, "For about every hour of festival, there is about six to eight hours of planning and work and other efforts, so I will be happy once the festival starts."
Hayes also says that it is all worth it in the end. Festa Italiana is a great way for local businesses to advertise what they have to offer.
"We want to make sure that Joey’s restaurant is recognized in Central New York and in order to do that we have to reach out. We don’t do elaborate TV, radio, or print advertising and we have limited marketing resources. My belief is that to get to the community you’ve got to reach out and participate in the community.”
Festa Italiana kicks off on Friday, September 14th at eleven and continues through the weekend finishing off Sunday at eight. Tents will be set up in front of City Hall at Montgomery and Washington St. Admission is free.
