Neighbors Unite to Control Student Rentals

Students returning to off campus rentals can expect a visit from a city inspector sometime this year. This procedure is part of the new Certificate of Sufficiency ordinance which was backed by the South East University Neighborhood Association. This new ordinance, which requires that all absentee owned rentals be inspected every three years to make sure it meets city codes, is just another step taken by SEUNA towards its goal of controlling the density of student rentals near campus. Their biggest fear is that there are more than five unrelated students living in these rentals says SEUNA Treasurer Harry Lewis. Over the summer the group pushed the city to limit the number of unrelated adults that could live in a house to three but the Common Council refused, fearing lawsuits. SEUNA has continued to work to lower the growing number of students in campus area neighborhoods by supporting the proposal of a new ordinance that would limit the number of parking spaces a new rental could have. The ordinance has not yet been approved.
