Well today was interesting. I didn't really know what to expect going into my producer week, but I guess it really helped that I had an experienced team with me. They have all been producers before so they showed me the ropes a little. I've also worked with Amy and Matt on several newscasts already and this was the second week I worked with Lara. This made it really easy because I knew how to communicate with each of my teammates. I think that communication really helped us. Even though we were the last newscast of the day, we really came down to the wire and if we didn't know how to talk to each other it wouldn't have worked nearly as well as it did. In the end, it worked out almost perfectly. We were over a little in A Block, but we were over so precisely that taking out one story kept us exactly on time.
I think the hardest part of the day, besides getting the last minute touches together, was helping Amy find a phoner. I had some ideas and she had some ideas, but they were all old news. We went through a bunch of ideas before Richard helped us find a good one, and the Spitzer lawsuit we ended up doing turned out great. I have to give her props for staying calm in the situation. I also have to give out some props to Matt. I messed up when carting his wrap, so it didn't work. But he came in and read it as good as he could without his sound. And just so I don't leave anybody out, Lara did a great job too!
I learned a lot this week. Things can always go wrong, it's about planning for when they do. It's hard being a producer and when you get into that booth, the environment becomes a whole lot more stressful.
