(Bob Antonacci with his family- www.antonacciforaccountability.com)
While covering Election Day, I found stories with a family angle. I did two stories, one at Our Lady of Pompeii Spaghetii Supper and one at a polling station in Goldstein on the SU South Campus. At both locations, people brought their children of all ages from infants to teens. It seemed families wanted their children to learn about democracy and politics and also to be involved in it!
At the spaghetii supper, Onondaga County Comptroller Candidate Robert Antonacci's family were outside the school still campaigning for their father. Bobby and Jackie were holding signs with their cousin and aunt asking for votes and honks. I spoke with the kids and both said they did not have opinions on the issues their father supports but think he deserves to win. Bobby also told me that he helps his father by putting up signs and repairing them as well as doing little things. When I went inside, Mr. Antonacci was more then willing to talk to me. He said he needs his families support when it comes to campainging and doing his job. He admitted to not making it home some nights for dinner but he wife said it is part of the job and that is when she just need to step up and be there for the family. Everyone in their family seemed really supportive and willing to make any sacrifice for Robert.
I spoke with a voter at Goldstein. Unlike many other voters, he did not come alone. At his side was his six year old son and eight year old daughter. He said he believed it is important to educate your children and get them involved as soon as possible. Both children said they learn about voting in school and think it is important. When I asked them why they said because people might get bored of the same old president. Although neither child said they wanted to be a politician, they both said they will vote someday.
